Why Classic+?

Classic's seasonal model has run its course. The progressive re-releases have carried the game through to Mists of Pandaria, original Vanilla servers receive no new content, and the one-off seasons — Season of Mastery, Hardcore and Season of Discovery — all ended. Players chasing the original experience have been pushed toward private servers, and the takedowns of the largest ones clear the field for an official product. Classic+ is that product: a permanent, evolving version of the original world rather than another season.

Wrath of the Lich King Anniversary: The Sibling Reveal

Camelot likely won't be alone on the BlizzCon stage. The Lich King featured prominently in Blizzard's BlizzCon 2026 announcement video, and a January Facebook post quoting Arthas — "In the end, you will all serve me" — has the community expecting a WotLK Anniversary reveal to follow TBC Anniversary (Black Temple arrives Aug 27). Leaked internal timelines place Wrath Anniversary around the end of 2026, landing close enough to Camelot that Blizzard's newest Classic offering could compete with its own anniversary progression for the same players.

What It Means for Private Servers

Blizzard's legal campaign against private servers has run on a similar clock to Camelot's development: Turtle WoW sued August 2025 (offline May 2026), Stormforge closed May 2026, Project Ascension hit with a nine-count suit including RICO claims in June 2026. Correlation is not causation — but the practical effect is that the largest custom Classic servers are being dismantled in the same window Blizzard prepares its own expanded Vanilla product.
