Rates are the first thing a private server puts on its front page, and x1 is the one that claims authenticity: experience, loot and gold at the pace the original expansion shipped them. What that means in practice varies a lot, because the scene now contains two very different kinds of x1 server. Some enforce it, some offer it as one setting among several, and the difference matters more than the number.

A note on bands first: x1 realms skew smaller, and many publish no counter at all. Where we have a number we give it, where we do not the tracker says unknown rather than guessing.

Strict x1: the museum servers

These are the projects where x1 is the design, not an option.

Blizzlike with an opt-out

This is where most x1 play actually happens: the rate is x1 by default, and the server lets you turn it up.

Large networks with an x1 room

If you want x1 with a crowd behind it, the big multi-realm networks are the compromise:

How to choose

If you want Pick
The strictest unaltered Vanilla Stonetavern ELWYNN
Non-profit, no shop, open source Lighthaven
Original patch cadence, no catch-up Ashen WoW
x1 with an opt-out for alts Anachronos, TrueWoW, WoW Patagonia
x1 with a big population behind it Warmane Lordaeron, WoW Circle
x1 five-player raiding TBC5Legends

One honest rule: on an x1 realm, verify the counter before you invest a character. Slow levelling is a deliberate commitment, and the projects that enforce it hardest are also the ones most likely to be tiny, because that is who they are for. That is a feature for some players and a trap for others, and the tracker tells you which one you are looking at.
