The BlizzCon skeleton is drafted (unpublished) and the predictions post is live — so let's get practical. When Wrath of the Lich King Anniversary launches (presumably late 2026 or early 2027), where should you actually play?
The official WotLK Anniversary — what we know
The Classic+ hub timeline has tracked every hint since January's State of Azeroth. Based on precedent from Vanilla and TBC Anniversary editions, the official WotLK release will likely feature:
- Fresh-start realms — everyone begins at level 1 on equal footing
- Phase schedule — ICC, Ulduar, and other content gates unlock over months
- QoL improvements — dual spec, dungeon finder, guild banks all come standard in 3.3.5a, so the Anniversary just has to not regress
- Blizzlike balance — no custom content, no playerbots, no cross-faction shenanigans
The private WotLK landscape
Warmane, Sirus, and Chromiecraft have been running WotLK for years. The community lists we scanned this week show a mature ecosystem:
| Server | Pop Tier | Character | Launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warmane | Large | 4 realms (Icecrown, Lordaeron, etc.), 2.5k-10k online | ~2012 |
| Sirus | Large | Custom content, 6-13k online, Russian-language dominant | ~2014 |
| WoW Circle | Large | Multi-expansion network, 13 realms, RU | 2007+ |
| Chromiecraft | Large | Non-profit AzerothCore, hyper-progressive | 2020 |
Plus 20+ smaller realms with distinct flavors — solo-scaled (TheraWoW, Stormgarde), Spanish (UltimoWoW, 890 Discord), Polish (Sunwell.pl), instant-255 funservers.
The trade-off
Choose the Anniversary if you want:
- Official stability and Blizzard-grade infrastructure
- A fresh start on equal footing with everyone else
- The "authentic" progression experience as Blizzard intends it
Choose private WotLK if you want:
- No wait — log in and raid ICC today
- Custom content (Triumvirate's level-60 endgame, Sirus custom races, Chromiecraft's non-profit model)
- Regional communities (RU on Sirus/WoW Circle, Spanish on UltimoWoW, Polish on Sunwell.pl)
- Playerbot-powered solo play (Stormgarde, Warstorm, TheraWoW)
The middle ground: Chromiecraft Chromiecraft occupies a unique spot: non-profit, open-source, hyper-progressive (patches unlock on schedule, no content gates), and all fixes upstreamed to AzerothCore. If you want a WotLK realm that feels "official" in discipline but "private" in accessibility, it's the best-in-class option — and it will survive the Anniversary because it doesn't compete on the same axis.
What the private scene does better
Private WotLK is a decade-deep ecosystem. It offers things the Anniversary won't:
- Solo content — Playerbot AI on Stormgarde and Warstorm lets you 40-man ICC alone
- Custom progression — Triumvirate-WoW's level-60 WotLK endgame with Mythic+ dungeons
- Niche communities — ERP (Azerotica), Romanian (Eternyum), Ukrainian (FreedomWoW), ERP-PvE (Azerotica)
- Instant access — no subscription, no download queue, no character transfer drama
What the Anniversary does better
- Trust — Blizzard won't shut down its own product
- Balance — thousands of hours of tuning vs emulated systems with edge-case bugs
- Cross-platform — Modern client, no custom patches, no private launcher headaches
- The crowd — the launch week spike will be real; every realm will feel packed
Verdict
The private WotLK scene isn't going anywhere after the Anniversary — it hasn't after Vanilla or TBC Anniversary launches. But the center of gravity will shift. Players who are on Warmane or Sirus for the population will likely sample the official realms; players who are there for custom content or regional communities will stay.
If you're picking one right now: Warmane's Icecrown for population, Chromiecraft for integrity, Stormgarde for solo play, or wait for the official Anniversary for the fresh-start dopamine hit.
