Turtle WoW was the largest custom Classic+ private server. A Vanilla realm with new zones, classes and systems on the classic client.
Eight years, a devoted community, its own in-game radio. On May 15, 2026, it closed for good.
This is how it ended, and what rose from the wreckage.
How it ended
Turtle WoW shut down after losing Blizzard v. Turtle WoW, a federal copyright case in California.
Blizzard used the RICO Act against individual devs and community managers. The server was framed as an enterprise, not a fan project.
The team also subpoenaed Discord, hosts and payment processors. Infrastructure the community relied on was cut off.
On April 13, 2026, the court ruled for Blizzard. Turtle agreed to a binding permanent injunction and closed.
The leak that made it immortal
Turtle was already immortal before it died. In Sep 2024 a leak published its core and client up to 1.17.
The code was mirrored on GitHub and RaGEZONE. Years of custom Classic+ work was democratized overnight.
That leak is why the community had somewhere to go.
Where the community went
When Turtle closed, its code became a family of Vanilla+ projects — most on 1.17/1.18:
- Octo WoW — restored 1.18.1 Jul 2026, three realms (N'Zoth PvE, C'Thun HC, Y'Shaarj PvP), phased raids 2026-27. See modern client.
- Capybara WoW — ex-Turtle SEA admins, two realms, ~10k online.
- Ravencraft — 1.18.1 continuation by former contributors, launched Aug 22 2026. See launch news.
- Caverns of Time — Turtle+ variant, launched Aug 15 2026.
- SandWorlds — Brazilian Vanilla+, 13 custom zones, cross-faction.
Beyond the Turtle family, Vanilla+ kept running.

The radio survived
One piece of Turtle outlived the server: its in-game radio. Everlook Broadcasting Co., tuned via the minimap, kept broadcasting after shutdown.
It rebranded as Out of Bounds Entertainment and streams 24/7. The in-game tuner died; the station did not. You can listen here.

The pattern is RICO, infrastructure subpoenas, permanent injunction. It now hangs over every major private server.
But the counter-pattern matters: the 2024 leak turned one server into a genre.
Turtle WoW is gone. Turtle-style Vanilla+ has never been more alive. Octo WoW and Capybara carry real populations and Ravencraft launched this week.
Blizzard closed the original. The idea outran the injunction.
