September 21, 2026: the design feedback loop is now official in both directions. Game director Ion Hazzikostas told Windows Central's Jez Corden (Sep 20) that retail's next expansion, The Last Titan, ships a "Heroic" world tier for players who want challenging, rewarding outdoor play with more friction and purpose, Diablo-style.

Two quotes carry the story. On the split: asked whether modern's open world will simply be forgotten now that Forever exists as the alternative, Hazzikostas refused the dodge: problems in Modern are real problems the team wants to fix, and "we would never say go play Classic if you want that. All versions of WoW should have that." On the mechanism: Heroic-tier experiments in Remix and recent patches were "promising," and the goal is a world where the outer world holds threats and excitement.

Read with our Forever coverage: the beta's friction-first questing, first-run dungeon weighting and no-warning-addon encounters are now visibly shaping retail's next expansion. The private scene spent years arguing Classic+ ideas into existence; Blizzard is now importing them back the other way.
