September 22, 2026: two first-party quotes that frame the Skyborne art fight, both via GamesRadar (Anna Koselke, Sep 15 and Sep 17).

First, origin. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield told GameSpot the race started with the team wanting elves: everyone loves them, they are popular, so the team brought Metzen pitches and variants. His answer, per Greenfield: do something, get a little crazy with it. Concepting followed from there. That answers where the blue elves came from. It does not answer the fit question, and Reddit reaction cited in the same piece stays skeptical, with one comment calling them out of place. Reader sentiment, labeled as such.

Second, caution. Asked on X why the art direction follows retail rather than Classic, Greenfield replied (Sep 16): reserve judgment on any model seen datamined or in screenshots until it can be seen in game and in context with the rest of the world, adding that datamined views might not fully represent how things appear in engine. The original asker accepted the point while keeping the concern about cohesion with Classic player models. Fair on both sides.

Tracker stance stays put: the official racials and subtype names are closed (Round 5), the aesthetic debate is taste plus in-engine evidence still to come. Revisit at launch, not before.
