September 23, 2026: the held Battle Mage item clears its verification bar. A Reddit player's beta testing, written up by Icy Veins PopTop, plus Icy's own note that the beta census "could all shift again especially if Battle Mage becomes a thing" make this a two-source report, not a lone creator's clip.
The chain: Mage's new Comprehension skill deciphers scrolls. The player worked through 119 scrolls to find the Scroll of the Saber, which references the Blade of Silverlaine. After farming Baron Silverlaine in Shadowfang Keep 12 times, the Blade dropped. Combine scroll and blade and you get the Coldflame Saber. The tooltip adds melee damage against frozen targets, and the original clip pairs it with Fingers of Frost, which is where the "Battle Mage" read comes from.
Two things this is not. It is not a confirmed archetype: Icy's own headline says Mages "might unlock" a playstyle, and a single frozen-target bonus is flavor text until the numbers land across specs. It is also not new to the beta: the finder was at it before the census, so this is tester curiosity meeting a shipped mechanic, not a hidden dev reveal.
What to watch: whether Coldflame Saber is a one-off collectible or the first of a scroll-plus-weapon crafting line, and whether any Mage spec can lean on it without becoming a worse version of a Frost build.
