Blizzard has confirmed the date: Black Temple arrives on Burning Crusade Anniversary realms August 27. Illidan Stormrage's fortress — the most iconic raid of the TBC era — opens its gates next Thursday, pushing official Classic players into the expansion's endgame stretch.
Why this matters beyond the loot table
Two threads converge here. First, TBC Anniversary is visibly accelerating toward its finish: with Black Temple open, the remaining question is Sunwell Plateau — and the handoff after it isn't speculation. Blizzard's own State of Azeroth presentation sequenced it explicitly: Classic news was promised "after The Black Temple," with BlizzCon 2026 (September 12–13) named as the venue. The Lich King's starring role in the show's announcement trailer only reinforced where that news points: Wrath of the Lich King Anniversary. Our Classic+ hub tracks why that timing creates an awkward overlap: leaked timelines put a Wrath Anniversary pre-patch close enough to Camelot that Blizzard's newest Classic offering would compete with its own anniversary progression.
Second, every official anniversary progression squeezes the TBC private server niche a little harder. Players deciding where to spend a leveling month now weigh official realms with fresh phases against projects like Rising Gods - Back2Basics or Faebright — each offering different rates, communities and custom twists that official progression can't match.
The pattern to watch
The anniversary machine has been remarkably consistent: Vanilla Anniversary recycled through 2025–26, TBC Anniversary followed, and Wrath is the obvious next station. For private servers, each official wave resets part of their audience — but history says it doesn't empty the pool. Players who outlevel official content, want different rulesets, or simply prefer smaller communities keep the scene alive between waves.
