All of Ascension's emulated WoW realms will shut down on September 4, 2026 at 7:00 PM Pacific (10:00 PM Eastern / Sep 5 02:00 UTC) under a mutual agreement with Blizzard. Project lead Dutch posted the notice on Discord August 29.

"It has been almost 10 years since Ascension emulated WoW realms began, and the final chapter of this particular journey is coming to an end," Dutch wrote. "All of Ascension's emulated WoW realms will shut down on September 4, 2026 at 10:00 PM" Eastern. Support stays active to the last day, remaining timeline content still releases this week, then all WoW-related material comes off the website and social channels as development shifts to "something new, unrelated to WoW or any Blizzard game."

Tracked: Ascension hub and all 4 live realms — Area 52 (Classless free-pick), Elune (Seasonal Wildcard/Draft), Bronzebeard (Warcraft Reborn) and Conquest of Azeroth (21 custom classes) — now marked dead (C&D, Sep 4, per Quissy). The launcher, website and socials will be repurposed for the next project.

From RICO suit to settlement in 11 weeks

Blizzard sued Ascension June 12 in the Central District of California (8:26-cv-01506, Derek S. Powell et al.), alleging DMCA/IP infringement, piracy and millions in cash-shop revenue, with summons requests late June and waivers due July 9. Ascension was the largest custom Classic network still standing after Turtle WoW (May 15 consent judgment) and Stormforge (May) — the same sweep now landing eight days before BlizzCon Sep 12-13.

No injunction was entered; Azcentral-style hosting in sanctioned Russia was widely assumed to shield the project. It didn't. Like Turtle WoW's team — now building an original MMO as Moonwhisper Games — Ascension will absorb the cost and move on.

Why this one mattered

Ascension wasn't a blizzlike realm. Its hook was classless free-pick builds, custom seasons, mixed Vanilla/TBC/Wrath rules, 21 lore-derived custom classes in Conquest of Azeroth and a "wildcard" random-ability realm — the exact systems official Era lacks. That is why it held population and why Blizzard treated it as a business, not a hobby server.

The comparison to 2016 (Blizzard shuts Nostalrius → announces Classic at BlizzCon 2017) is unavoidable but not a promise. Holly Longdale already teased Classic's future on the State of Azeroth stage in January and got cut off mid-sentence — the staged blackout was deliberate. With Black Temple live Aug 27 and the 1.60 Camelot branches advancing to 69609 this week, the timing reads as house-clearing before a Classic+ reveal. It could also just be BlizzCon-adjacent housekeeping.
