The short version

World of Warcraft 1.12 runs on hardware from 2004. Wrath 3.3.5a runs on hardware from 2008. If your machine was built in the last fifteen years, it already clears every Classic client on our tracker. Do not buy a computer to play private servers.

Published minimums per client era

Client CPU RAM GPU
1.12.1 (Vanilla) ~800 MHz 256 MB 32 MB 3D
2.4.3 (TBC) 800 MHz 512 MB 32 MB 3D
3.3.5a (WotLK) 1 GHz 512 MB to 1 GB 64 MB 3D
5.4.8 (MoP) Dual-core 2 GB 512 MB DirectX 11
7.3.5+ (Legion on) Quad-core 4 GB 2 GB DirectX 11

Those are Blizzard's own published minimums, and private servers inherit them because they run the same clients. 85 of our 185 tracked entries run 3.3.5a, which asks for a 1 GHz processor. Your phone is faster.

The one upgrade worth buying

If anything on an old machine bottlenecks a Classic client, it is the hard drive. Zone load times on spinning disks run 30 to 60 seconds; on any solid-state drive, under 10. It is the only upgrade with a perceptible effect on this workload, because the CPU and GPU requirements are already met.

Everything else, more RAM, a newer GPU, a faster CPU, buys nothing measurable for 1.12 through 3.3.5a. Save the money.

The exception: modern clients and Unreal rebuilds

Three categories on the tracker genuinely want modern hardware: MoP and later clients, Emberveil's Unreal Engine 5 rebuild, and multiboxed setups running several clients at once. For those, a mid-range discrete GPU from the last five years suffices; nothing in this scene needs a flagship card.

Networking matters more than hardware

Most "lag" complaints on private servers are geography, not graphics. A Singapore-hosted realm from South America will stutter on any machine. Check where the realm lives before spending anything: our entries record hosting regions where published. Routers and powerline adapters help only if the local network is the bottleneck; the ocean is not fixable retail therapy.

A full latency guide is coming. Nothing here needs a purchase.
