Episode 3 of the Forever podcast drew a line straight through the game's raids: Onyxia keeps its lengthy Classic attunement chain, non-account-wide at launch, while Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit ship with no attunement chains at all.
That split is a design philosophy stated in content decisions rather than words, and it is worth unpacking.
What preservation costs
Onyxia's chain in Classic is weeks of work: faction grinds, dungeon runs, the Drakefire Amulet. Keeping it, and keeping it per-character rather than account-wide, preserves the original game's pacing contract. Every player raids on the schedule the chain sets, not before.
The cost is onboarding friction at exactly the moment a launch wants none. A returning player who remembers the chain fondly and a new player hitting it cold are having different experiences, and the podcast offers the second player no concession.
What the exemption buys
Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit launch without chains but with unspecified "extra steps for the full experience." That phrasing matters: not attunement, but not nothing either. Something between a gate and a bonus, details unannounced.
The likely reading is onboarding math. New raids need bodies at launch, and a weeks-long chain in front of them would starve the content the team just built. Onyxia can afford its chain because forty players' worth of demand already exists.
The account-wide question deferred
"Not account-wide, at least not at launch" is doing quiet work in that sentence. It preserves the option to flip later, presumably once the launch wave has attuned once and the friction argument weakens. A launch-only restriction with a named exit is a compromise with its own sunset clause.
Watch whether it flips, and when. The flip date, if it comes, tells you when Blizzard considers the launch wave over.
What this does not resolve
The Onyxia date conflict. An attunement players grind argues for launch-day relevance, and we have said so in the hit list, but arguments are not evidence and December 9 still stands on the recap. The chain's existence constrains the conflict without settling it.
