Scheduled publish — Sep 4 19:00 PT verification pending. All 5 Ascension realms (Area 52, Elune, Bronzebeard, Conquest) are marked dead Sep 4 per mutual agreement.

Ascension was not blizzlike. It was the place you built a character from any ability in the game.

For nearly ten years it held the largest classless community in private WoW. On Sep 4, 2026 at 7:00 PM Pacific, all realms go offline under a mutual agreement with Blizzard.

The realms: Area 52 (Classless free-pick), Elune (Seasonal Wildcard/Draft).

Bronzebeard (Warcraft Reborn), Conquest of Azeroth — scheduled dark.

The story mirrors Turtle WoW four months earlier.

How it ended

Blizzard filed Blizzard v. Derek S. Powell et al. on June 12, Central District of California (8:26-cv-01506).

Allegations: copyright infringement, DMCA, false designation, plus RICO enterprise and conspiracy around the custom launcher and infrastructure.

The complaint pointed to large commercial exploitation — millions in cash-shop currency — and hosting via a Russian company under U.S. sanctions. Many assumed that shield made it untouchable.

Docket moved fast. Summons late June, waivers July 9 for Powell, Mannion and two entities, answers due Sep 8.

Counsel appeared July 2 and July 10, winning an early skirmish when Blizzard withdrew early discovery. No injunction entered. Seven realms stayed online, shop stayed open.

Then, like Turtle, it settled. On Aug 29 lead Dutch posted on Discord:

"It has been almost 10 years since Ascension emulated WoW realms began, and the final chapter of this particular journey is coming to an end. All of Ascension's emulated WoW realms will shut down on September 4, 2026 at 7:00 PM Pacific as part of Ascension's and Blizzard's mutual agreement. Support will remain active until the very last day. Remaining content on the timeline will release and receive support before shutdown, then all WoW-related material will be removed from the website and social channels as development shifts to something new, unrelated to WoW or any Blizzard game."

Support through the final day, final timeline drops still released. Then a full wipe of WoW material from site, socials and launcher — repurposed for a new non-WoW project.

Financial terms, code disposition and claim releases were not disclosed. Same as Turtle's confidential settlement after the April 13 ruling and May 15 consent judgment.

Difference: Turtle closed after a ruling and permanent injunction. Ascension closed after 11 weeks by agreement, without a ruling, eight days before BlizzCon.

The hook that made it a target

Ascension held population because official Era didn't offer what it did:

All share new dungeons, RPG creature overhaul, expanded world. That is the feature list official Classic lacks — and why Blizzard treated Ascension as a business, not nostalgia.

Where the community goes (no leak)

Unlike Turtle's Sep 2024 1.17 leak — which spawned Octo WoW, Capybara WoW, Ravencraft and Everwood WoW — Ascension has no code dump.

The 5 realms simply go dark. Launcher, site and socials will be repurposed, not archived.

What it means

The 2026 pattern is not subtle: Stormforge May 14 → Turtle May 15 (consent judgment) → Ascension Sep 4 (mutual agreement).

Playbook identical: RICO over launcher/infrastructure, subpoenas to Discord, hosts, payment processors, cost absorption. Russian-hosting shield failed.

It lands eight days before BlizzCon Sep 12-13. Longdale teased Classic's future on the Jan State of Azeroth stage before a staged blackout cut her off — the blackout was deliberate.

Black Temple went live Aug 27. Camelot branches (Dev 2 1.60.1.69609, Dev 5 1.60.0.69606) got three updates in 25 hours Aug 28-29.

The sweep plus the Camelot trail makes a Classic+ reveal feel inevitable. But as with Nostalrius Apr 2016 → Classic Nov 2017 (~19 months), resemblance is not evidence.

If you played Ascension, verify any "character transfer" claims — none were announced. Treat repacked clients as malware risk, don't reuse Blizzard passwords.

Ascension closed the original. The idea — a living Classic world — outran the injunction again, just without a leak to carry it.
